It’s cold, but SO much snow, yeah!

Everything seems to be aligning well for a great snow year…. As I look out my window, I see white everywhere, from the streets to the rooftops and beyond.  The skiing and riding is great, especially considering it is only mid December.

I guess if it wasn’t about money, everyone would come, right!!  Haha… welcome to the ‘Real World’.

Epic Passes - Yes Really the Best Deal :-)

Mother Nature is reminding us to THINK SNOW with the recent storm and powder predicted for our state over the next five days!  Epic Pass purchase is only available until November 24th.

All too often, snow resort visitors find themselves standing at the ticket window expressing SHOCK at the latest lift ticket prices.   For the resorts, lift ticket price methods have evolved dramatically in recent years. Looks a little more like airline ticket prices.. (Side-note... I was once told that for every plane that takes off, there might have been as many as 5000 different price options from the time the flight went up for sale and the time of take-off!!!).   Well, the practice of daily fluctuating lift ticket prices is a reality.  Factored into the daily management price decision are # of runs and lifts open, as well as snow conditions.  Call a lift ticket office today and ask them the price for a ticket on Dec. 26th.  You'll get a quick "I don't know".

Fortunately, there's somewhat of a solution.. sort of a middle-ground, factoring in that you might not know when you want to take your snow vacation, but also giving you advanced purchase price protection.  Epic Passes, offered by Vail Resorts and valid for use at ~11 different resorts, allows for you to pick 4, 7, or unlimited # of days on the hill at a fixed price.  And you need not know which days you'll visit or even which resort at time of purchase.  If you travel at the Christmas / New Year's holiday, you might save as much as 30% or more than the window rate...

Is this a perfect deal?  No.  You have to pay your non-refundable dollars NOW.  But, it certainly is good enough and you'll enjoy the savings for having committed early.
The snow is great already.  No need to worry about the weather either.

Aspen Mountain to Open Early for the Weekend of November 16-17

Early Season Snow Allows Both Mountains to Open Before the Scheduled Thanksgiving Day Opening

Aspen/Snowmass, CO., November 10, 2013 – Aspen Mountain will open for the weekend Saturday and Sunday, November 16 and 17, twelve days earlier than the scheduled opening on Thanksgiving Day. Aspen Mountain and Snowmass will be open daily for the season on Saturday, November 23, five days before the scheduled opening.

Early season snow and cold temperatures have allowed crews to work around the clock and get the mountains ready. Skiers and riders will enjoy more than 200 acres of terrain, 3,267 of vertical on an 18 inch base. The Silver Queen Gondola and Ajax Express Chair will be open as will the Sundeck and Ajax Tavern.

New Snow in Colorado!!

Q: When should I travel to get the best deal?
Calendar cartoonANOW!!!  The early season snow is looking VERY promising this season, so let's get you on it ASAP. However, if you can't, then...
Avoid school vacations! Early December and early April will give you the biggest bang for your buck.  However, there are great deals from early January until mid-February and then again in early March.  Mid-week stays can be cost-effective, too. Try and stay for at least 4-nights, for further discounts. (and more FUN!)

Q: When is the best time to book my next snow vacation?
stopwatchANow!!! As soon as you know your schedule and how many people are traveling.  Lodging choices at the snow resorts are not abundant like beach resorts and do sell out quickly.  Also, there are lots of 'early booking' discounts.  Last, if you need to cancel, penalties are minimal with advanced notice; so there's lots to gain and little to lose by planning early.

The staff at Snow Sport Vacations has found the final snow seeking hold-outs; savoring one of the few and last places to make some turns in North America in August.  See them 'tearing it up' on Mt. Hood, Oregon.  Now, would this be the end of snow season 2012-13, or the beginning of snow season 2013-14???

Thinking about snow in summer

Today I spoke with a woman from Texas who is already thinking about skiing… She says its 104 degrees and the mosquitoes are the size of small cars.  She said envies me for getting to be in Vail today, where the temperature is 70.  We talk about her plans to visit several ski resorts this coming winter and how she enjoys the freedom that the Epic Pass now provides; giving her the opportunity to visit ski areas in Colorado, California, and Utah.  I find it intriguing that folks from the warmer climates gather their enthusiasm for their upcoming snow vacation as a form of mental escape from the heat.

It won’t be long now… school is starting, leaves are changing, jackets are being pulled from our closets. We all wonder if it will be a ‘good’ snow year.  We hope so, but we can’t control that so there’s no point in dwelling, but instead just aligning with optimism. Even a little snow makes it do-able, and the surroundings so beautiful.

Anticipating winter, each of us in our own way…
